CONT:NUUM—Event Horizon

As the first-ever thesis project from the USC Themed Entertainment BFA program, CONT:NUUM—Event Horizon is a spaceship-themed escape room. Guests assume the role of space scavengers who must board a legendary, time-jumping ship and solve its onboard puzzles. Their mission is to navigate the vessel away from a looming black hole before it's too late.

My key duties in the project

  • Concept Development: Drafted the original attraction experience and background story.

  • Lead Designer: Designed the "light-up turning table" puzzle.

  • Production & Construction Lead: Oversaw construction, assembly, and ensured structural integrity and show quality control.

  • Operations: Served as one of the primary operators during the expo.

From idea to the final

It all begins with an idea, later made into digital model, then physical test models and finally the real prompt in the room

later digital version of the real prompt

At the same time, I created the model in Rhino for my teammate Elva to model the whole attraction.

I had an idea to do a light puzzle asking people to figure out configuration of different gels.

Lastly, I built the actual prop with wood and laser cut the panels. I spray-painted them and assembled it into the final being.

I built a “4inch to 1 foot” model with lights and gels that function the same way as it should for play testing.

The photos below show details of my light-up turning table puzzle. Guests rotate the two inner layers of the table to align the light with specific symbols, revealing a sequence of colors and symbols. This sequence serves as a crucial clue for a subsequent puzzle.

The ORIGINAL version storyline of CONT:NUUM

I drafted the initial storyline and game mechanisms for this experience, and I wrote the script, which was refined into its final version by my teammates Casey.
