Rise of Fox: A Stop Motion Animation Clip
The creation of this stop-motion animation involved every stage of the production process, from character and environment design to final cinematography. I designed and fabricated the puppet, created its costume and props, and built the complete set to support the story's visual narrative. The animation was synchronized to dialogue extracted from an existing film, requiring meticulous frame-by-frame lip-sync animation. Careful consideration was also given to lighting, camera composition, and shot framing to enhance the cinematic quality and storytelling of the final piece.

The Puppet
This stop-motion puppet was designed and handcrafted from scratch using a combination of clay, foam, fabric, and wire armatures. The internal structure consists primarily of a flexible metal wire skeleton, reinforced with foam and sponge to create a lightweight yet durable body capable of expressive posing during animation. A detachable tail was incorporated into the initial body design through an embedded mounting point, allowing for interchangeable components while maintaining structural integrity.
The character's head was sculpted from clay, kiln-baked for durability, and hand-painted with custom gel eyes to achieve the desired expression. Every costume element was hand-sewn using plain fabrics, with the design reflecting the character's identity as a reserved and formidable bounty hunter. A layered robe and poncho in cool-toned fabrics reinforce the character's stoic personality, while subtle weathering techniques were applied to create a worn, battle-tested appearance. The costume was also tailored to accommodate the detachable tail without restricting movement, balancing visual authenticity with the practical requirements of stop-motion animation.

The Set & Props
The stop-motion set was designed and constructed primarily from recycled cardboard, with the environment scaled specifically to complement the puppet and support the planned camera compositions. Initial concept sketches and scale studies established the overall layout, which was iteratively refined throughout production to balance creative intent, material availability, and project timeline.
Spray paint served as the primary finishing medium, providing the industrial texture and muted color palette that reinforced the atmosphere of the hidden base setting. To facilitate animation, metal wire anchor points were embedded throughout the set, allowing props and character elements to be securely fixed and repositioned between frames while remaining hidden from the camera. These adjustable mounting points improved stability during shooting and enabled precise incremental movements throughout the animation process.
To further enhance the realism of the environment, practical lighting elements were integrated directly into the set and used alongside external studio lighting during filming. This combination of built-in and controlled lighting helped establish depth, mood, and visual consistency across each shot.

The Shooting
The production process involved careful planning of the animation frame rate, shot composition, and cinematography to achieve smooth motion and effective visual storytelling. Camera placement was designed around a combination of close-up, medium, and wide shots to emphasize character performance and narrative pacing. Lighting was carefully arranged to control direction, intensity, color temperature, and mood, creating a cinematic atmosphere while maintaining visual continuity throughout the frame-by-frame shoot.
